Hello! I was overseeing the operation of CSNET-RELAY today and I
noticed that you send eight copies of a message to various addresses
reached through CSNET-RELAY. Since you don't send one copy of the text
with multiple recipients, can I assume that your mailer cannot do so?

If that is the case, permit me to offer to support a mail expansion list for
those users reached through CSNET-RELAY. Below please find the list of
recipients I gleaned from our logfiles. If this does not match your list,
please let me know and I will fix it immediately. If you wish to use this
mail expander, let me know via return mail and I will enable the list.

I am offering this service for several reasons. One is that the less text
we handle, the lighter the load is on CSNET-RELAY. Another, if we receive a
single copy of the text, we can send a single copy to those recipients on
the same host (umass-cs, tektronix, and hplabs in this case); since sending
mail via CSNET costs real dollars, this helps keep costs down. Seven fewer
messages sent by you must surely reduce the queue latency at SU-AI.

Please let me know if we can do this for you.

Here is the list of recipients:

Common Lisp Mailing List Forwarding
Dennis,
There are approximately 9 Common Lisp mailing lists that are distributed
to CSNET sites. You are correct in assuming our mailer (the Stanford
SAIL mailer) cannot mail to multiple recipients. However, the sum of
sites to which we mail is not stable. At least once a week some machine
to which we mail goes down or changes operating systems, causing mail to
be rejected back. In these cases I edit the distribution list until
the problem is fixed. In fact, last night I took hpfclp!clisp@hplabs off
of the distribution list until a local host inside HP is repaired.

The total number of people receiving mail from these 9 or lists is
approximately 200. If you would like to set up a local re-distribution
list at the CSNET forwarder, would you be able to interact with these
frequent failures and editings that need to go on?

Another possibility is that most of the addresses on CSNET are stable,
and we could partition them into a few separate addresses at your
site, a stable set and an unstable set.

You asked to be sent the name of someone at each site to be the person to
contact about mailing list bugs. I guess that's me (marick@gswd-vms),
although the postmaster is kane@gswd-vms.

While we're at it: we've brought up BSD Unix on this machine, so we've been
doing local redistribution of mailing lists to bulletin-board-like things.
That's been working for a few weeks, so I'd like to handle the CL mailing
lists that way.

Please remove marick, preece, leguard, wagner, and gray from the various
CL mailing lists and add commonlisp@gswd-vms. (I'm probably the only person
on more than one of them.)

Thanks.

	down or changes operating systems, causing mail to be rejected
	back. In these cases I edit the distribution list until the

This presents no problem for us; we move mail for a living and we handle
this sort of thing every day.

	The total number of people receiving mail from these 9 or lists
	is approximately 200. If you would like to set up a local
	re-distribution list at the CSNET forwarder, would you be able
	to interact with these frequent failures and editings that need
	to go on?

We do have the capability to do that; our expander will insert its own name
as the sender (in the envelope) so that errors can get handled locally.

	Another possibility is that most of the addresses on CSNET are
	stable, and we could partition them into a few separate
	addresses at your site, a stable set and an unstable set.

There's no difference here; the list is kept in a file that is accessed
whenever the address is expanded, so the changes apply instantly.

We are considering an automatic mechanism for you to update the list file
yourself, but that's a ways off as yet.

Sound good to you?

cl-error-handling
cl-foreign-func
cl-graphics
cl-iteration
cl-multiprocessing
cl-object-oriented
cl-subsets

The -request address will get both me and the postmaster, at least for the
time being.

It's probably simpler to just forward addition requests and not try to tell
people about these addresses, although you can if you wish.

These lists are all enabled; you can use them immediately if you want to.
If there are any problems at all, send a note to me or to postmaster,
preferably both. We can also send you the present contents of any of these
lists at any time.

Good luck!

I'll send you a copy.

As far as maintenance of mailing lists, the following person should be

Also, we have decided to set up a bboard for each of the mailing lists that
you are maintaining. Please send us a list of the names of each one and I'll
send back the utah aliases. That way, you can send one copy to Utah and
we'll redistribute. I know of the following:

Are there any others??

Finally, we will get some documentation to you as soon as possible on our

The mailer software is now set up so that common-lisp mailing lists can
be forwarded to the local Unix news system. In order for this to start
working, we need to have each mailing list sent to the associated
address at Utah:

	common-lisp -> common-lisp@utah-cs.arpa
	objects -> common-lisp-objects@utah-cs.arpa
	windows -> common-lisp-windows@utah-cs.arpa
	iteration -> common-lisp-iteration@utah-cs.arpa
	errors -> common-lisp-errors@utah-cs.arpa
	graphics -> common-lisp-graphics@utah-cs.arpa
	subsets -> common-lisp-subsets@utah-cs.arpa

Each list is forwarded into a newsgroup whose name has the form
'fa.common-lisp.*'; to read (for example) the 'errors' list, use the
command 'readnews -n fa.common-lisp.errors'.  utah-orion receives all
newsgroups in fa.common-lisp.*.  Articles are expired after 60 days;
see me if you want to alter this.

I have volunteered to take care of the common lisp redistribution lists
that are already coming to franz (uucp'd from kim at Berkeley). Please let
me know if you have any problems relating to mail coming to any of our
addresses.

I wonder whether tekchips!sridhar@tektronix ought to be replaced with
sridhar%tekchips@tektronix. And what about the hplabs "bangs"?
Perhaps it doesn't matter. We should encourage the use of
distribution lists at the CSNET sites to make the problem of updating
the lists easier.

Many of the people who have recently asked to join this list stayed on for
a only week because the volume of mail was too high. Are you prepared for
20 - 30 messages per day on picayune topics?

Of the last 10 people who asked to be put on, even though I sent them the
above paragraph, 4 have asked to be removed.

    OK, I made this into a redistribution list. Marty should only put
    "clmail@Sun.COM" onto the list on SAIL. This will expand to the
    list:  clmail@clam, pweiss, smuchnick, djackson.
